Things you don't say to "fat" girls

Thursday, April 25, 2013

You guys, let me just take a minute to say that I am a 5'2" girl  who weighed almost 200 lbs. at this point last year.  So when I tell you that I learned a lot about what not to say to the fat girl, I'm not kidding - I was the fat girl.  I'm not saying I'm some skinny bish now, but I'm working on it, so let those bygones be bygones.

With that, if you're anything like me & are trying to make your life better/healthier (whether you're obese, overweight, underweight, or just right), first thing's first: YOU GO ON WITH YOUR BAD SELF.  What you are doing is not easy.  It requires discipline & dedication, so you ROCK for what you are doing.  Keep it up.

If you are involved in anyway with a person who is trying to better themselves (i.e. boyfriend, girlfriend, mother, father, friend, trainer, etc.), have patience & be understanding.  What this person in your life is doing makes them finally realize that there is a problem with the way they were living their life.  Contrary to popular belief, that is not an easy thing to do.  Be loving, offer encouragement, and above all else NEVER say any of the following:

"I can eat whatever I want and it doesn't matter one bit I don't get why it matters for you"

"Ugh, I don't fit into my size 00 jeans anymore...  I feel fat."

"Does this (size xs) bikini make me look fat?  I can't really tell."

"I've never been fat before...  I don't know what that even would be like."

"What do you mean you can't breathe after walking a mile?"

"I mean...  it sort of makes your hips look bigger than they are."

"Are you really going to wear that?"

"You probably should crop that picture."

"Do we have to eat healthy?  I'd much rather order pizza."

"It's not going to make a difference, anyway."

"You do look a little pudgy."

"I'm not out of shape, so why do I have to do this with you?"

"You did this to yourself."

"You deserve it."

"I would die if I ever got that large"

etc.

Trust me, people have said similar things before to either myself or others that I know/love and it is just. not. okay.  And again, f you're someone who is working towards a better "self," YOU GO YOU.  You are changing your life!  For those of you who need a swift (but loving) kick in the butt & are almost ready to take the plunge:

let's be supportive & promote one another's successes, shall we?

some of those things are so terrible! i have friends who (thankfully not anymore but a few years ago) would sit around when we were eating dinner talking about how fat they were and their stomach rolls, which they were tiny! really really skinny - and it always made me so self conscious. not that i was really overweight, but definitely not that skinny and always thought if you think you're fat, what do you think about me? thankfully maturity has allowed that to not happen anymore!

I hate the word fat. I used to be the 'fat' girl too and it drives me bananas. I don't know about you but sometimes I still see myself as the fat girl, even when I know I'm not - so these really hit home with me : )

Amen girl! You know I've had my struggles with gaining weight back over the past couple months and it's so hard on my ego! I've got to get my rear in gear. You are doing great though - I always love seeing your progress!

Amen. I totally get this. I really love the comments about how it's so difficult to find clothes in size 6 or smaller. At 5 foot 6 inches, I've never seen a size 6. I've lost nearly 40 pounds, and I'm down from a size 18 to almost a size 12. But seriously - I will squash the next person who tells me their {skinny} life is too hard.

Jeez if I ever heard those things out of someone's mouth, I'd probably smack them!

I can't believe people say things like that! Some of those are terrible! People can be so mean.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! You are such an inspiration and I'm amazed at how far you've come already! You go, girl!

Love the quote at the end of the post!
