Wants vs. Needs

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Welp, I succumbed to the z-pack..  stay tuned b/c in 5 days I'm guessing I'm going to be feeling just like a million bucks (just in time for Octoberfest Saturday - impeccable timing!)

I had mentioned earlier that Nick + I had attended a conference for the engaged this past weekend and really loved it [minus the day-longedness].  We learned a lot about each other, and particularly enjoyed an activity in which each of us had to go through a list and decide whether the listed item was Extra, Necessary, Unnecessary.  It was too funny to see what we agreed / disagreed on.  Some of my favorites are listed below... Mine will be in pinkish red, N's in blue, and my commentary will follow

Cable TV E E le duh.  but we do dig it.

Having a Dishwasher N N I loved that we both said necessary.  It totally is.  I don't "do" dishes unless I absolutely have to - i.e., wine glasses [since I've tried dish washering them, and successfully broken 3 this way]

Continuing Education N N Otherwise, neither of us will ever be able to advance our careers and we'll be living off of our nice "modest" incomes forever...

Having Smart Phones N U I don't know about you, but I need my iPhone.  [I understand this is totally superficial and wrong, and N + I agreed I could keep mine and he'd give up his if ever necessary... Thanks, N]

Gym Membership/Exercise Equipt. U we are so perfect for each other...  Nick put it best - it's totally unnecessary b/c we have this at our disposal for free and don't even use it.  Woopsies.

Saving for ER Fund N absolutely necessary.  absolutely not Nick's forte.  I'm the saver + we're both A-ok with that!

Laptops/Home Computers U When I say necessary here, I realize one could survive without it; however, in the 21st century it is nearly impossible to get through a day/week without needing to use a computer...  I was a little more superficial with this one, but for good reason.

Organic vs. Non-organic food U Are you surprised?  Not many guys that I know care about organic food :)  I'm still weening it in slowly + surely with some things here and there!

We also had to go through a budget and one of the categories was monthly clothing allowance...  The "sample" family had $50/mo. budgeted for this and Nick was shocked - he said "there's no way we spend that on clothes every month... we could take that way down."

That was an awkward confession to share with him.  Sorry, Nick.

In my defense, he gets a lot of his clothes from his mom aaaand I am cutting back.  ish.

What are some things you find to be extra,
 necessary, + unnecessary?
what about extra necessary, unnecessarily extra, and necessarily unnecessary?
Have a great day, all!

Having an ER fund is such a good idea. I know it has bitten my family in the butt a few times to not have one!
And I totally agree with a smart phone and laptop being necessary.. in a superficial way! I know I could get along without them, but in this day and age it would be a HUGE adjustment.

Cool list! I agree with you on pretty much everything. I don't know what I would do without my dishwasher by the way, it would just take too long!

It's always sad when the fashion budget gets sliced...but I totally understand that.

What a great idea. We definitely need to do something like this soon!

I hope you're feeling better!

So I don't have a dishwasher (or an AC) bc they are pretty much non-existant in Hollywood apartments. It's def a NEED though and I hate not having one :(
